Fourteen years after the Arik air -lagos-bound air trip, the STOWAWAY BOY, Daniel’s incidence comes to mind, emphasizing how Nigerians including teens strive for greener pasture.
In 2013, a 13-year-old boy from Edo State shocked the world with a daring and fatal voyage. Named Daniel Ohikhena, the teen was driven by a ambition to travel abroad. Daniel hid inside the wheel well of an Arik Air flight from Benin city, Edo State enrout to Ikeja, Lagos. Believing the plane was headed to the US, Danaiel had to endure the vicissitudes which according to him was momentarily deserving. Instead, it was a short 30–35 minute domestic trip — but one that could have cost him his life.
Clinging to hope at 30,000 feet, Daniel endured freezing temperatures, deafening engine noise, and unimaginable risk. Miraculously, Daniel survived it. However, the experience left him with hearing complications due to prolonged exposure to the aircraft’s engines. After landing, Daniel was rescued and handed over to the State Security Services (SSS) for investigation. What could have ended as a tragic tale took a remarkable turn.
The then Governor of Edo State, (now Senator) Adams Oshiomhole, stepped in. Rather than condemnation, Daniel received compassion, admonition. The Oshiomhole granted him a scholarship, ensuring that the young boy who once risked everything for a dream would instead pursue his future through education.
Daniel’s story remains a fascinating reminder of youthful bravery, resilience to pursue their dreams though through unimaginable means.
Sometimes, destiny has a way of driving somebody’s ambitious beliefs to reality but ultimately, God ensures He perfects our dreams by exposing us to those who truly will help fast tracknit to fruition.
