The reported suspension of Professor Mike Ozekhome by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has sparked considerable outrage within Nigeria’s legal community and public space.

While opinions may differ on the circumstances surrounding the decision, one fact remains undeniable: Mike Ozekhome has built a reputation over decades as one of Nigeria’s most prominent constitutional lawyers, human rights advocates, and public intellectuals.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ozekhome has demonstrated remarkable courage in handling complex legal and constitutional issues. His contributions to the development of legal scholarship, advocacy, and democratic governance have earned him respect both within and outside the legal profession.

History has shown that great professionals often encounter periods of challenge and controversy. Such moments, however, do not necessarily define the entirety of a person’s legacy. Rather, they test character, resilience, and the capacity to overcome obstacles.

There is a popular saying that if a righteous person falls seven times, he rises seven times. That sentiment aptly reflects the enduring spirit that many associates and admirers attribute to Professor Mike Ozekhome.

Adversity, no matter how difficult, is often temporary. While excellence and dedication leave a lasting imprint.

As the legal processes and institutional mechanisms continue to run their course in his ongoing trial, many believe that Ozekhome possesses the experience, strength, and determination to navigate the current challenges before him. His long-standing commitment to the legal profession suggests that he will continue to contribute meaningfully to legal discourse and public affairs.

Ultimately, the true measure of a distinguished gentleman is not whether he faces adversity, but how he responds to it. In that regard, there is strong reason to believe that Mike Ozekhome will rise above the present difficulties and continue his journey of service, scholarship, and advocacy.
