President Bola Tinubu Wednesday signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law following weeks of legislative debates at the two chambers.
The signing was done around 5:00 pm at the Presidential Villa, Abuja in presence of principal officers of the National Assembly.
The 2027 general elections are scheduled to hold on February 20th for Presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6th for Governorship & State Houses of Assembly Elections.
The amendment has been a subject of public debate reinforcing concerns by opposition and civil societies elements calling on the government to rescind their planned move to halt real-time transmission of results from polling units to INEC’s central server.
The ruling All Progressives Congress APC however opposed the technology adoption, while opposition parties and some stakeholders support it arguing that areas with poor telecommunications infrastructure would only require manual approach allowing manual collation where electronic systems fail.
With this presidential assent, the controversial amendment electoral bill is now laid to rest.
